National Cybersecurity Center launched cyber-hygiene app for lawmakers

The nonprofit National Cybersecurity Center last week launched an app to promote cybersecurity hygiene among state lawmakers.

The “NCC-Resolute Cybersecurity app” contains a collection of best practices and cybersecurity resources, including incident-response plan templates, cybersecurity hygiene checklists, FAQs and a glossary of common cybersecurity terms. Lawmakers and their staffs can also access a cybersecurity-vulnerability assessment to gauge how well protected their information is and receive cybersecurity alerts and security updates from technology companies.

As a former state chief information security officer for both Colorado and California, and the federal Department of Homeland Security’s first deputy undersecretary for cybersecurity, one of my continuing tasks was working with state lawmakers and state government executives to help them understand the multitude of issues in the cybersecurity arena. Because legislative bodies turn over fairly frequently, this was a never-ending responsibility that I took seriously and to which I devoted a significant amount of time, and still do.

State legislators and executives have formidable responsibilities to govern on complex and often technical cybersecurity issues that most have had very little experience with. The cybersecurity space is incredibly dynamic, with the threat and vulnerability environment changing almost daily, so these leaders are constantly weighing the law of unintended consequences as they address public safety on one hand and over-regulation of business on the other.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Tuesday, July 6th, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper and Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers visited the National Cybersecurity Center in Colorado Springs to discuss how the U.S. can strengthen our defenses against cybersecurity attacks in light of recent cybersecurity breaches.

The National Cyber Security Center is a non-profit for cyber innovation and awareness. Hickenlooper helped start the center in 2016 in coordination with several people from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and the community.

Colorado Springs’ National Cybersecurity Center prepares for massive expansion

COLORADO SPRINGS – Three and a half years ago, then-Governor John Hickenlooper and Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers came up with a plan to create a hub for cybersecurity training and businesses in the city.

Three and a half years later Hickenlooper, a Democrat now is in the U.S Senate, and Suthers, a conservative mayor, returned to the building that is now that hub—the National Cybersecurity Center off North Nevada.

National Cybersecurity Center conducting trainings in wake of cyber attacks

The National Cybersecurity Center has launched a 50-state initiative to train state leaders on thwarting cyber threats. The initiative comes on the heels of the high-profile Colonial Pipeline hack, which cost the company more than $4 million in ransom.

“This past week, the Colonial Pipeline in Georgia was taken down by bad cyber actors, triggering state governments around the country to reassess their cyber preparedness,” said a news release issued by the NCC.
